For the Love of Bookstores - Boulder Book Store

Image
Colorado never ceases to amaze me. The more I look after my well-being, the more Colorado opens his arms wide for an embrace. And all I can do is embrace him right back. And yes, I think Colorado is a burly man who lives alone and makes furniture. I have no idea where I got that from but just roll with it. This feeling especially came into play when my boyfriend and I visited Boulder this past weekend. Although we've visited the town before, this visit we actually spent some time walking down Pearl Street, the main drag for all kinds of shops and restaurants and anything else your heart desires with a hipster frame surrounding it. Our first stop on the street was to Boulder Book Store, listed as THE book store of the year. As soon as I saw the "we have three floors of books" sign, I think I glided inside. Three floors of books, Boulder merchandise, and quite the supply of Buddhist-influenced items greet you. Everywhere I looked I saw books that I wanted to purchase and

A Flash of Jazz - Cardboard

Aubrey swore this would be the last time, and yet he know it wouldn't be. He hung his head low and whispered - Damn. Why did it have to be now? Why did it have to be here? He lifted his head and straightened his hat on his head, then got up from his booth in the coffee shop and walked toward the man dressed in a black zoot suit seated on the far end of the counter. As he approached the man, the man began to slowly stir his blacker than night coffee. Aubrey stopped a foot away from him as pure hatred shot from his eyes. Now, why be like that, the second man asked as he raised his coffee cup to his lip and slurped loudly. That's a mighty fine cup of java, he said with a nicotine-stained grin. Mighty fine. I ain't got time for this, Tommy, Aubrey growled as he slowly reached into his coat pocket. Tommy watched with wary eyes as Aubrey p

A Flash of Jazz - New Sensation

Perhaps it was the way he wore his hair. Or, maybe it was because he was smoking a cigarette, a habit I thankfully never took up. In any case, I knew he was going to change my life. He smoked at his table, not caring if offended anyone nearby, and I had to say something. I strolled up to him, as if I did this sort of thing all the time, and lightly touched his shoulder. He looked up at me and then looked away as if I disturbed him. I stood there for a moment in shock, then quickly returned to my table and hid behind my menu. I felt rage, embarrassment, and fear. I refused to peek from the menu, in case he now stared at me with daggers. I took a deep breath and then exhaled as I slowly removed the menu from my face. He was gone, leaving a still-lit cigarette in the ashtray as a cold reminder that once upon a time, a woman had dared to bother him. I set the menu on the table as a cold sensation crept through my body. From that moment on, I decided to tell the world to fuck off. I had b
