A Flash of Jazz - Holiday Spirit

She stared into her half-full wine glass and sighed. It wasn't supposed to be like this, she thought as she took a long sip, then set her glass on the table before her. I'm sick and tired of the holidays. She burrowed herself deeper in her thick blanket, recently purchased at an expensive store that catered to people who needed to be told what kind of personality to have. The kind of place in which the colour beige ruled. She thought, only three days ago, that this year she would be more in a festive mood for Christmas. That, damn it, she may be single but she was alive and ready to live her life as if for the first time. She finished off her glass and then turned around on her couch to stare at the world passing her by. It seemed that everyone held a leaning tower of packages in their arms as they scrambled to get the right gift just in time. People laughed silently to each other and to themselves, a chance to spread goodwill or whatever they were calling it these days. She, however, had just completed her second novel, a mammoth of 600 pages, and enjoyed a quiet celebration because of it. Yet, she felt no joy and bliss when it came to Christmas. In fact, she wished it to disappear completely, all the while knowing full well that such thoughts were considered to be blasphemous. She hefted the blanket off her body as she got up to stretch, then padded into the kitchen to prepare a plate of Chinese food she had ordered ten minutes ago. When she returned to her living room and uncovered windows with her plate and chopsticks in hand, she plopped down on the couch and began to eat. Suddenly, she heard the sound of jingling bells behind her. She turned around to see a man dressed as Santa Claus standing in front of her window as he shook a rope of bells. He smiled at her, then set a finger against his nose. She was about to write him off as some drunk until she gasped as he slowly disappeared. Suddenly, it began to snow. She turned around to face her meal, then stared at her empty wine glass. She smiled to herself as she thought - nope, still don't care - then grabbed her chopsticks and resumed eating with much secular gratitude.
