A Flash of Jazz - Cardboard

Aubrey swore this would be the last time, and yet he know it wouldn't be. He hung his head low and whispered - Damn. Why did it have to be now? Why did it have to be here? He lifted his head and straightened his hat on his head, then got up from his booth in the coffee shop and walked toward the man dressed in a black zoot suit seated on the far end of the counter. As he approached the man, the man began to slowly stir his blacker than night coffee. Aubrey stopped a foot away from him as pure hatred shot from his eyes. Well, the man said as he continued stirring his coffee, here I am. And here you are. He looked up to see the face of hate and then chuckled. Now, why be like that, the second man asked as he raised his coffee cup to his lip and slurped loudly. That's a mighty fine cup of java, he said with a nicotine-stained grin. Mighty fine. I ain't got time for this, Tommy, Aubrey growled as he slowly reached into his coat pocket. Tommy watched with wary eyes as Aubrey pulled out a simple cardboard square and set it on the counter. Aubrey then tapped his finger twice on the cardboard as he whispered - Mary died to make sure you got this, but honestly, you ain't worth it. Tommy took another sip of his coffee, then set his cup in the sauce and picked up the cardboard. He sniffed it twice and sighed. Only the finest, right Aubrey, he said with a wink. We make the cardboard for people to die in, Tommy, Aubrey said, and only one person has died so far. Tommy chuckled as he took another sip of his coffee. And I guess I'm the second, he replied as he stared at the sugar canister in front of him. Aubrey felt sweat running down his face; he wanted to kill Tommy, make him pay for all his sins. make him bleed like a stuck pig. I know you want to kill me, Tommy whispered as he set his hand on top of the cardboard. Aubrey closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then spit on Tommy. We aren't done here, Aubrey growled then turned and left the coffee shop. Tommy refused to look into his former friend's face. He took another sip of his cooling coffee and whispered - mighty fine.
